contained between strict lines of gliding screens and painted silk—primordial powers unleashed but held in space and sustained in time by a collar worthy a mythological beast: the fu hound—she hound
Tokyo holds a special place in my heart—and in the history of my Leica Q2 Monochrome. These photos were taken in my traditional tatami bedroom, overlooking an overgrown garden. My old neighbors might wonder what strangers keep knocking on my door, to be dominated and documented. Here are my three favorite prints from that session, each limited to just 10 unique 16″ x 20″ high-quality editions.
Shion doesn’t speak English, and I barely speak Japanese. Our language is beyond words. It’s in every breath, every micro-movement—every action and reaction. Even when words are translated, they rarely carry the same meaning across our two cultures. I’m a super individualistic, comfort-seeking Scandinavian, while Shion is communal and self-sacrificing, rooted in the Japanese way. Maybe that’s because she’s a dancer. Maybe because she’s an explorer of the same sadomasochistic practices. In the end, it comes down to trust. To express my desire, and deserve her submission.
I was curious to explore belonging with Shion. To make her mine. Without violence or force, but as an invitation to walk in the world I create. To be seen through my eyes. To be immortalized through my lens. The heavy steel necklace, both restricting and comforting. Cold at first, then eventually warm, like her heart. Somehow, the intimacy of a Japanese tatami bedroom feels different from the culture that, from the outside, might be perceived as cold and distant. Tokyo, in my heart, will always remain a city of contrast.
